Anil – Fun, fresh, fitness and better than driving.
I started cycling to work after joining the C2W scheme and purchased a hybrid bike to take me on road and gravel tracks. The main route I chose to commute on was approx 20 mile round trip along riverside dedicated cycle track, and countryside roads. So why did I decide to cycle and why did I continue to do so?
When I first started to cycle to work it was admittedly tough going. Bum hurt, legs hurt and quite tiring towards the end of the week. This lasted about a month.
Once the aches went away I started to enjoy it. It used to take me approx 45 mins to get to work, only 10 mins extra than when I took the car but without the added annoyance of sitting in a car for an hour a day. I arrived at work feeling awake, energised and that a true sense of achievement had been gained by cycling to work. It also saved me considerable fuel money; £60 a week.
The route I took was stunning. Early riverside cycle commuting really does prepare you for a long day at work; taking in the scenery, wildlife where I encountered a variery of birds, including a never-before-seen by me Barn Owl, herons and also otters and weasels.
I also managed to lose quite a bit of body weight; was nice for this to be pointed out by friends and family.
I unfortunately no longer cycle commute to work as my role changed as did my locations. I miss it tremendously and in my search for a new job am hoping I can find somewhere which will allow me to commute to work.
Cycle commuting; go on, give it a go!
