Can I have a rant yet?

Can I?..... please... this is my fourth bi-weekly column, so I think I'm entitled to one.... I can.... Thank you..... There's an old joke.... No matter how pointless your job seems.... Don't forget there is someone out there who's job it is to fit indicators on a certain prestige manufacturers vehicles.... When I drive I use my indicators on roundabouts, at junctions and strangely enough in car parks..... A ...

I cycled to work, and in my bag I put…

My Wife shouted down from upstairs the other day....'Would you get X out of my handbag please....(No big secret what X was... I just can't remember....) 'No problem Darling,' So I went in her handbag... Something I would never do without her express permission…. Among the the sweet wrappers, tissues, receipts, purse, keys and nail varnish bottles, I found whatever it was she wanted and took it up to her.... ...

Love on the commute

During my early days of cycle commuting, I always sent a text to my darling wife to reassure her I hadn't been squashed by a forty tonne truck... one morning I received a phone call.... The conversation went something like this 'Oh you're alive then' 'Of course I am, I texted you' 'No you didn't' 'Yes I did' 'Err... No you didn't 'Well I texted someone....' After I hung up the work phone I checked my mobile ...

Commuting and weather predictions

Do you check the weather forecast ready for the next days commute? I do and I have 3 levels of weather warning for myself.... level 3: Raining badly.... Now I don't mind cycling home in the wet when a hot shower, dry clothes, tea and a radiator to dry my shoes on await me... but I passed my driving test for a reason and that reason is not getting pee wet through and then standing on my feet for nine hours a ...

Cav goes Bananas……

Mark Cavendish has secured his seventh win of the season. Narrowly beating Caleb Ewan and Nicola Ruffoni by, in technical terms 'a gnats arse' (half a wheel) in the opening stage of The Tour of Turkey. He will wear the turquoise leader's jersey in stage 2. Mark said of his win, "There are a lot of big sprinters at the race so we knew it would be chaotic, and it really was," and added that the season hadn't ...

Lights, Camera and Action…….

Few subjects divide cyclists. Bike brands do, a lot people when asked what car they drive they will say something like 'oh it's just a little xxxx' or 'It's a xxxx and its shit.' But ask a cyclist what bike they ride and they will push out their chest with pride and announce the bike brand loudly... and then tell you why its better than your bike.... Few other things split us..... Whether you should wear a ...

When is a bike like a broom?

I've just upgraded the wheels on my bike. Is it the same bike? Of course it is.... If I upgrade the the groupset to Shimano 105 or perhaps even DI-2 (I'm not going to by the way.... I'm happy with the standard Tiagra and I can't afford it....) would it still be the same bike? I'd say yes. I might want to change the bars and seat post for carbon fibre ones, still the same bike? What happens though if I fail ...

Sausages and Cycling

You normally associate barbecues with charcoal encrusted food, luke warm beer pulled from a bucket of tepid water because the fridge is too full and if you are really unlucky a case of jelly belly due to under-cooked chicken. You don't normally associate barbecues with cycling. This year I've been to three barbecues already and I must say the food was fantastic and the alcohol properly chilled on all three ...

A Future British Hero?

All cycling eyes recently have been on the Yellow Jersey chase in France and the Velodrome in Glasgow, Chris Froome and Mark Cavendish both exited the Tour de France early on and although Sir Bradley got Silver at the Commonwealth Games, everyone had hoped for Gold and a triumphant return to the track….. Whilst the above were taking place there was something else going on in the cycling world. It was the B. ...

Strava….. Friend or Foe?

The tabloids often go Strava bashing, i.e. writing negative articles about how us cyclists are putting ourselves and others in danger by K.O.M (king of the mountain) chasing.... and we get all indignant about it...... Should we? They use Strava as the big bad wolf even though there are many similar websites... Ridewithgps, Endomondo, even Garmin now have their own version. It's just Strava is by far the mos ...
