The race was the second event of the UCI Women’s Road World Cup series, a series comprised of 10 races. Armitstead won the 2014 UCI Women’s Road World Cup on August 24th last year.
Last month, Armitstead nabbed the seventh place in the Ronde van Drenthe race, the first event of the UCI Women’s Road World Cup series. Last February, the West Yorkshire-born cyclist received other wins for the current season at the Ladies Tour of Qatar, including two stages and the master title.
The cyclist’s current team is Boels Dolmans. Aside from a short reprieve from her contract with the company because of a recurring stomach ailment, she has signed with them since 2013. Armitstead renewed her contract with Boels Dolmans last year. Her current agreement states she is to be part of the team until 2016.
Armitstead’s 2014 track record began successfully after she won the first place at the Omloop van het Hageland. She also won the first World Cup race of the same season, called the Ronde van Drenthe. The Brit athlete took home the second place trophy at the Tour of Flanders, the third World Cup race, while Ellen van Dijk won first place.
Armitstead started cycling in 2004. A visit by the British Cycling’s Olympic Talent Team at her school influenced the career choice. She graduated from the British Cycling’s Olympic Podium Programme and has been a vegetarian since she was a child.
